Hey y'all!! Maren suggested in the email that we talk about characterization, storylines, etc. I'll post about what Maren and I have already discussed and then if y'all want to pop in with any questions, ideas, comments, thoughts about your character and how he/she will fit in, that would be great.

As you know, this RPG is a prequel of sorts to M's "At Night" series, her Buffy/Cordelia stories set in NYC, AU after Chosen. In the series Buffy and Cordelia are already a couple; the RPG will explore how that relationship is developed. We're not going to automatically open with B/C together; we would like to play it as close to already established canon as possible, i.e. Buffy and Cordelia haven't been with a woman. How does these newfound feelings for a woman affect each of them? etc. It's not going to be "they meet, they fall in love." There will be a lot of denial, a lot of struggling to accept the truth. Fun stuff to RP!

You know your character but here's a rundown of everyone:

Buffy: Me (Lee)
Cordy: Maren
Wes: Maren
Faith: Bri

The above four are regular characters. The characters are recurring but it's open for them to be regular.

Dawn: Jessica
Gunn: Meg
Cordy's friend (currently unnamed): Dana
Connor (will possibly join the game at a later date): Dana

If you've never been involved in a RPG, don't worry about it. I personally think they are a lot of fun, but it is strange when you first start playing, particularly if you used to writing fics and dealing with all the characters' thoughts/feelings. Only being in charge of, I guess you could say, one character is very freeing but it's also a little weird to get used to. Don't worry if you think you don't have a great voice for your character. That's part of the fun-learning and developing more of your character and getting more comfortable with him/her.

If you have ideas for any OCs (original characters), by all means share. This LJ will be used for all discussion of the RPG-future plotlines, characterization, questions, etc. It makes things easier so that everyone is on the same page.

As for the pace of this game, some RPGs are very fast-moving. This one won't be that way. It'll be more laid-back and relaxed. The only thing we ask is if you're going to be gone for awhile-vacation, moving, you're really sick and won't be on the computer much, just let us know so that we can move your character around if need be if the action gets going again.

I still use my LJ to post in the RPG. Some people like to create character journals. Whatever you want to do is fine. If you have icons of your character that you want to use to show that you're talking as Buffy or Gunn or whomever, that's fine. If you don't, don't worry about it. You're welcome to use them, that would be great, but if you don't care to, that's fine too. When you do post your character, the general subject title for the comment/post looks like this (it helps to keep everyone clear on what's going on)

Subject title (ex. Sisterly talk) - (Buffy-her bedroom) Tag: Dawn

or

Subject title (ex. Party time!) - (Cordy-her apartment) Tag: Buffy, any

and so on. Since the posts thread themselves at 50 comments, we'll try to keep each individiual post to around 45 or so. If you see a post is getting close to that number, and your character and the others still have posting to do, feel free to start a new post. When that happens, generally you'll take the last comment in the thread that your character was going to respond to and use it as the basis for the next post. Bold the old comment and then have your character's response below in regular type and then post it.

Also, Maren and I have talked a little bit about a minimum number of posts. We were thinking three-whether they are long, narrative posts, or dialogue posts in a conversation... whatever they are is fine, but a minimum of three. How does that sound to everyone? Too much, not enough?

Oh, and I think this goes without saying but this does deal with femslash (WHOO-HOO!) and will be adult in nature. If NC-17 girl lovin' isn't your thing *looks at list of those participating*... Okay, so y'all are all okay with NC-17 girl lovin'. This doesn't mean that Buffy/Cordy will immediately jump into a sexual relationship or that once they're together, their relationship will be all about sex, but when it's called for, sex will happen. :)

I'm sure there is other stuff I need to discuss but I've forgotten it. Not a big surprise there. :P

ooh this is a prequel? for some reason i thought it was sequel. cool. it will be cool to see how it all develops.

so does it start pretty soon after Cordy and Wes leave LA (do they leave at similar times? obviously they aren't leaving together, but what is the timeline of their leaving?)

i'd imagine that if that is the case Gunn's initial role is going to be a sort of 'why did you leave?' kind of thing, or an 'okay i get why you left, part of me wants to leave to, but can you please come back we need you?'

also, where does NFA fit in with this? looking at the char. sketches you guys have set up this is post Illyria but pre-NFA? are we imagining NFA doesn't happen? it seems that way if Gunn tracks Wes down to try to get him to start up an AI branch in NY.

and is Gunn wanting Wes to set up an AI branch to work against W&H in NY or within W&H in NY? if it's against does that mean that NFA did happen, Gunn & Angel & Spike survived and are re-starting AI LA?

also, i need a Gunn icon. i can make one, but it occurs to me that it would be cool to have a Gunn icon that matches all the other icons in the userinfo so could whoever made those (i'm guessing maren, b/c i don't think you icon lee) make me a Gunn one?

*Excellent* questions, Meglet!

The timeline for Cordy and Wes is very similar with Cordy leaving a bit before Wes (that's how I see it, that is. If we want him to leave earlier, or at the same time, that's cool too.). They go in separate directions-Cordy to New York, Wes throughout America. While Wes is traveling, he runs into Faith and at the urging on Gunn to establish an AI branch in NYC to counterbalance the increased activity of the W&H branch, they head to New York.

Cordy, meanwhile, has been in New York, working and acting and basically just trying to get her acting career going. She has a friend in the theater (played by Dana) but she hasn't met Buffy yet. Whether she meets Buffy first and then Wes/Faith, or vice-versa, is up to the group.

Buffy is also in NYC but she has no clue the others are. She's distancing herself from the slaying aspect of her life to find out who she is as a person. She came to NYC to finish her degree and one day, while randomly shopping somewhere, she runs into Cordy when they both reach for a particular item. She and Cordy will slowly become friends (and more) while Buffy still struggles to leave slaying behind.

As for NFA, perhaps we could do an altered battle that occurs later on in the story (that could bring Angel in as a guest star *g*). As for Gunn's involvement, that's something we need to discuss. How do you see him in the game? Perhaps he's a liason between Wes and Angel and flies out to NYC occasionally to help Wes/Faith with a demon? Maybe Wes/Faith fly back to LA to help them with certain things from time to time? What would you like to do with him?

I think Cordy leaves first- goes to NYC and sets herself up. Wes leaves a little later, not too much, and does his drinking binge thing. We were thinking we'd start in the Winter 2005, which would have put Cordy in NYC long enough to set up a life/routine and Wes long enough to have worked up quite the drinking problem :)

i'd imagine that if that is the case Gunn's initial role is going to be a sort of 'why did you leave?' kind of thing, or an 'okay i get why you left, part of me wants to leave to, but can you please come back we need you?'

I would love to maybe do a thread in the very very beginning where Gunn finds Wes to ask him about setting up an AI in NY to combat W&H and Wes being all, "what are you going to ask me to come back again?" and Gunn saying not this time although he may feel conflicted about that. Then we can have Gunn be the liason and fly in on occasion to help with cases-- that way you could be flexible with when you can post. If you find yourself getting into it a lot and having a lot of time, we can find a reason to move Gunn to NYC and make him a regular OR let you pick up an OC who is based in NYC.

also, where does NFA fit in with this? looking at the char. sketches you guys have set up this is post Illyria but pre-NFA? are we imagining NFA doesn't happen? it seems that way if Gunn tracks Wes down to try to get him to start up an AI branch in NY.

My thought is that NFA hasn't happened yet (although we could so something similar down the line). Cordy woke up, Fred-Illyria happened, and "Origins" happened (so that Wes can know about Connor) but otherwise we won't stay true to AtS S5. But, I'm totally open to other suggestions/ideas.

I will definitely make you Gunn icon to match.

Yay! so excited!

Ok, so first things first! *kneels and averts eyes*

marenfic, would you please make me a Dawn icon to match the others? I would be so grateful!

So...Dawn. Did she go to Europe? Did she go to Cleveland? Is she still touch with Buffy? Is she in touch with with anyone from LA? Should she be in school still?

I realize that some of these things I'll have to make up on my own, but I'm just curious as to how you guys would like Dawn to fit into the story!

Looking forward to this!

Rock on! You're learning already.

What would YOU like to see for Dawn? Since the game is set in Winter of 2004/2005, Dawn would be right about 18, correct? I think she should be at least 18 so if we did develop a love interest for her later on, it would be legal. *g* That's me, though, so if you're thinking something different, don't hesitate to say it.

As for where she is... When Maren and I first started talking about this, we thought maybe she would be in London with Giles training to be a Watcher and perhaps attending university as well. But again, if you want to do something different, that's cool.

Buffy has spoken with both Dawn and Giles occasionally since she's been in New York but never anything in depth. She steers conversations away from her personal matters and from anything supernatural-related since she is trying to put that life behind her. She is still very hurt and bitter by what happened in the S7 episode "Empty Places" when Dawn and the others kicked her out of her house. So, if you're willing, I would lovelovelove to delve into that when Dawn comes for a visit, they talk on the phone, whatever.

What do you see for Dawn? :)

I would love for Dawn to find a reason to come to NYC, but I should probably wait until Buffy and Cordy get together. So, I may post some stuff from London first. What do you think?

As for a love interest, I would love that down the road! Anybody volunteer to write Spike yet? ;) But, you know, of course, I'm open to anything!

Adn, absolutely, the issues between Buffy and Dawn during "Empty Places" would be really interesting to analyze. I'm all for it!

Love what you guys are doing so far!

Your plans for Dawn sound great.

If you decide you want to be able to get in on interaction before Dawn appears in NYC, you could pick up an OC.

Hmm... Well, it says in the Wes bio on the main group info page that Gunn offers to send Spike out to help Wes get the new branch up and running, but Wes turns him down. So would that mean that Spike isn't supposed to be in NYC, or just that we'd have to come up with another way to bring him out?

Because if the Oh So Wonderful Maren and that other chick are okay with it, I'd be willing to take Spike on. I haven't written/played him much, but I like doing so, and I'd love to get some Faith/Spike friendship going. So if they A-OK it, you've got yourself a Spike. :)

I think we need to keep Angel and Spike out the area at least until Buffy and Cordelia have established their relationship. Lee and I discussed maybe bringing them in as guest (especially Angel as a guest) later on in the game but for now having either of them present would create too many obstacles to B/C that neither of us want to deal with.

I'm open to you picking him up at some point in the future though. What do you think Lee?

I agree, Maren. I think Spike would be interesting to bring in, be it regular or recurring, but only down the road. Same for Angel (only for him, recurring or guest). Spike and Angel are powder keg issues for Buffy and Cordelia, particularly Buffy, and bringing them in too early would only take the game in a direction I don't think we want to explore yet. I also think that bringing them in after B/C are together would allow for much more interesting interactions between the various characters.

That's perfectly fine with me. I just thought I'd extend the offer, in case we wanted to bring him in at some point. It's not like I'm going, "OMG, I'm die-eeng! I need to play Spike n-o-o-o-o-o-w!

Thanks for the offer, Bri! I appreciate it!

But, I totally understand what they're saying above. It sounds like we have quite enough story to make it interesting right now so we don't need him! :)

At least not right now...

I agree with everyone!

Spike would only complicate things right now. And, our story is already off to a great start so we don't need him.

It's just that sometimes my Spike/Dawn love comes out at inopportune times!

Oh, by the way, loved your Faith posting. The only comment I had is that Dawn is actually in London, not Cleveland :) I know it's a pain in the ass to edit still so if you don't want to no problem but I thought I'd mention it as an FYI for the future.

Yeah, my problem in that post wasn't knowing where Dawn was, it was the lack of clarity in the status of their friendship. I meant it to mean that Dawn, even though she was in London, was still part of the life and the circle of friendships that Faith had run away from. I just wasn't sure how to work that in clearly.

And glad to know you liked the post. :)
